Happy Halloween!

Hope you're having a great Halloween! I hosted a Halloween party this year. I'll show you some treats I made.

Of course, Joey and I carved pumpkins first... I used the insides to make pumpkin pie. (The tricky part is squeezing the liquid out of the pumpkin so that the pie won't be mushy.) And roasted the seeds with garlic salt, olive oil, pepper, chili pepper, and a touch of curry powder.

Festive cupcakes! (Ok, the cupcakes are from the store.) We also had a small cauldron with Dragons Blood resin burning. Very witchy.

Vampire soup (aka borsht) with rye bread bats! And Witch's Fingers! (Used almond for nails.)

While I'm in Martha-Stewart-mode, here's a little fall-themed bouquet and assorted squashes to decorate the table. (The squashes can be used for cooking, too.)

Happy Halloween!

Trip - Kona 2012

I've been a little behind posting my trip photos! But I'm going to properly catch up. In April, Joey and I went to Kona. It's a great vacation spot for this apocalypse year--volcanoes, dark beaches, and a high mountain top to see the universe.

My favorite... Mauna Kea! One of the highest mountains. We drove up above the clouds. I got pretty light-headed from the altitude, but it was worth it. There's even a geeky outer space store on the way there--awesome!! We drove up in time for the sunset.

So high:

Sunset above the clouds!

Here we are... all bundled up for the cold mountain:

This picture makes me happy because we look so geeky and adventurous:

On the drive to the mountain it was like... Sleepy Hollow land!!!! So foggy and creep and windy-roady. We even saw a dead turkey hung up on a fence.

Black Sand Beach!

We went on a dolphin tour. I was snorkeling and saw several dolphins swimming far below me. Later on, I jumped into the water and came face to face with a dolphin for a split second before it swam away. It was pretty exhausting keeping up with those fast things! On the way home they swam along our boats. They were jumping around as they followed us. I was in heaven--I was sitting on the edge of the boat and I felt like I could pet them.

Lave tube!

Volcano! I wish I saw me some lava action!

Hope you guys enjoyed the photos from our trip! I highly recommend Kona--the wild and beautiful island!

Author Readings - Danny Marks and Gretchen McNeil

Halloween is near! I hope you guys are in the mood for spooky books. Last Wednesday I went to two YA horror authors' event at the University of Washington Bookstore.

Daniel Marks talked about his book VELVETEEN:

At sixteen, Velveteen Monroe was kidnapped and murdered by a madman named Bonesaw. But that's not the problem.
The problem is she landed in the City of the Dead. And while it's not a fiery inferno, it's certainly no heaven either. Grey, ashen and crumbling more and more by the day, and everyone has a job to do there. Which doesn't leave Velveteen much time to do anything about what’s really on her mind.
Bonesaw.
Velveteen aches to deliver the bloody punishment he deserves. And she's figured out just how to do it. She'll haunt him for the rest of his days.
It'll be brutal...and awesome.
But crossing the divide between the living and the dead has devastating consequences. Velveteen’s obsessive haunting could actually crack the foundation of her new world, not to mention jeopardize her very soul. A risk she’s willing to take—except fate has just given her reason to stick around: an unreasonably hot and completely off-limits coworker.
Velveteen can’t help herself when it comes to breaking rules . . . or getting revenge. And she just might be angry enough to take everyone down with her.

Next, Gretchen McNeil (who I've been online-friends with for a few years) talked about her second book TEN:

It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives—an exclusive house party on Henry Island. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their reasons for being there (which involve T.J., the school’s most eligible bachelor) and look forward to three glorious days of boys, booze and fun-filled luxury.

But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.

Suddenly people are dying, and with a storm raging, the teens are cut off from the outside world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn’t scheduled to return for two days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?

Later that weekend, Joey and I went to get drinks with Gretchen, who is a super fun person to talk to. She brought along her boyfriend and her friend and we went to Knee High Stocking (a speakeasy style bar). I am very glad to see her doing well!

Hope you guys get a chance to check out more YA horror books--seems like an up and coming genre!

Kickstarter Rocks!

Recently, I contributed to Digital Manga via Kickstarter to bring Tezuka Osamu's graphic novel, BARBARA, into print here in the US. Tezuka is one of my all-time heroes and a graphic novel legend. If you've never checked out his graphic novel, I strongly recommend it.  Tezuka has created hundreds and hundreds of graphic novels--all which I am eager to discover. If only they were all available in print...

Plus, Digital Manga gave out awesome awards--a beautiful poster and t-shirt:

Look at this poster... I love Tezuka's drawing:

I think publishing through crowd-funding is very interesting and hope to see more projects successfully come to life through it. Whenever I browse the site, I discover new, exciting projects, and also, old classics like this that can be re-printed.
